Respect for the spiral

敬意を表して

I wanted to pay tribute to the Earth’s minute and magnificent cycles, and when I was researching them, I found that the movement of fluids, such as wind and water, often comes up when materials are transferred. Fluid movements seem to include spirals, so I’m researching spirals. There are spiral structures everywhere.

Spirals seen in shellfish: Nautilus, snail shells, ammonites, and other shells grow by stretching the tip of the shell to match the size of the body, which causes the shell to coil and form a spiral shape.

Spirals seen in plants: Sunflower seed whorls, pine cones, etc. are spiral shaped to grow while maintaining strength, just like shells, and it is said that the way branches and leaves grow is so that the leaves do not overlap and photosynthesize efficiently. Morning glory vines, for example, naturally form a spiral shape as they twine around each other.

Spirals found in the human body and other living things: the whorl of the head, and parts of blood vessels may be spirals when cells grow. The cochlea in the ear is effective at concentrating sound, and DNA is a double helix to increase information density in a smaller volume.

Microscopic spirals: It seems that the stable shape of crystals and polymer structures eventually becomes a spiral structure. Valence electrons in a magnetic field move in a spiral due to the Lorentz force.

Spirals seen in the atmosphere and oceans: Typhoons, tornadoes, and whirlpools are all spiral shapes due to the movement of fluid that acts toward the center, while ocean currents and gyres may be spiral shapes due to the efficient movement of fluid that minimizes resistance.

I’m sure there are many more if I research it. There’s also talk that spiral motion is a good way to use your body. It must be a functional, efficient structure that allows for full force. I feel like shapes that appear on both a microscopic and macroscopic level are basic elements that make up this world, and spirals seem to be one of them. They feel like a fusion of straight lines and circles, and are both functional and beautiful – spirals are amazing. And the Earth also moves around the solar system, rotating and revolving on its axis, so this is also a spiral. The Earth is amazing.
