When researching nitrogen, the topic of lightning comes up. It’s well known that years with a lot of thunder lead to good harvests. Nitrogen in the air that plants cannot absorb is converted into nitrogen oxides by lightning discharge, which then dissolves in the rain and acts as nitrogen fertilizer. It seems there may be a reason why 80% of the air is nitrogen. Lightning seems to strike not only on land but also in the sea, and it is said that lightning provides more nitrogen than nitrogen-fixing organisms such as bacteria. Lightning is amazing.

Recently, I was researching magnetism and learned that lightning can create strong magnets. Naturally occurring lodestones have a fairly weak force. They are apparently strong enough to be used as a compass needle, but not strong enough to attract iron. Apparently minerals such as magnetite need to be exposed to a strong magnetic field to become magnets. It seems that lightning strikes generate strong electric currents that create strong magnetic fields. Stories of stones attracting iron have appeared since ancient times, but it may have been lightning that created them.

It is also said that lightning constantly charges the electric field that surrounds the Earth, known as atmospheric electricity. Lightning simultaneously releases energy further up into the sky and onto the ground. A negative charge falls to the ground, and at the same time, a positive charge flies into the ionosphere about 100 km above the ground. I had always thought that lightning was a discharge of electricity, but it is a discharge for the electrically charged clouds and a charge for the Earth. The Earth is apparently like a large electrical circuit, and the generated energy is surely used where it is needed. The Earth is amazing.

It seems that the original source of cloud electrification is the friction of water, but I think it’s an amazing mechanism that huge static electricity can be generated by the friction of water vapor and ice particles.
Another thing is about frequencies. Just as humans have brain waves, the Earth also has a similar frequency, apparently called the Schumann frequency, which is about 7.8Hz and is similar to the brain waves a person experiences when relaxed. It seems to be an electric field fluctuation occurring all over the Earth, and things on Earth may be affected to some extent. This Schumann frequency seems to be generated when lightning discharges cause resonant vibrations in space.

The effects of lightning are amazing. It’s a global phenomenon, with the earth’s electrical circuits and frequencies. Lightning is amazing. The earth is amazing.
