Respect for beauty

敬意を表して

We don’t notice it much when we are busy with our daily lives, but sometimes, when we have a little more time, we suddenly see a scene that we find beautiful. Recently, I have found beautiful things like clouds that change color just before the sun sets, living broadleaf trees in the city, and the surface of the sea shining in the morning sun. Of course, I also find the entrance to a newly built apartment building, antique wooden tables, PC designs, and AI images beautiful. I also find refined functional beauty without waste beautiful, and I also find designs that can be explained by the golden ratio or mathematical formulas beautiful.

However, when I look at the clouds, I feel like there is a certain beauty that is difficult to explain numerically. Why do we feel beautiful when we see a landscape? When I start talking about what beauty is, it seems like there is no end to it, but I think it is a mysterious thing. Why do we feel beautiful when we see a landscape?

Whether in a park or in the mountains, we often see trees that we think are beautiful, but when we look closely, they are not exactly symmetrically beautiful. Branches grow out of places that make us wonder why, and nodes grow from different places on both sides, but when we look at them as a whole, they seem to be in harmony. It is strange, but I don’t really understand how trees can be beautiful when they have functional elements that allow them to receive sunlight efficiently and increase the surface area exposed to air.

Water also feels beautiful. There are many mysteries surrounding the substance of water, and although it is familiar to us, it seems like a mysterious substance, but perhaps it is precisely because of this that it is beautiful. We find beautiful scenes with water, such as water that transmits light, water droplets, slowly flowing rivers, waterfalls with violent splashes, gently rippling oceans, and large, rolling waves. Perhaps it is the combination of water and light that makes us feel this beauty.

This may be functional beauty, but I also find beauty in the mathematical beauty of physics, the microscopic world, atomic structures, and crystal structures. Is it because there is a certain order or symmetry that makes us feel the beauty of mathematical formulas and structures?

And in the macro world, I think the sun, moon, and stars in space are also beautiful. Is it the way the light scatters and the colors that make them so beautiful? When you can see the stars, the sky is usually very wide, so perhaps the expanse of space is also related to their beauty.

It’s a mystery why things are beautiful no matter how much you zoom in on them when you look at them microscopically, and beautiful no matter how much you zoom out when you look at them macroscopically, but I think it’s an amazing world. I’ve never seen it in person, but I’m sure the whole picture of the Earth, which produces and is surrounded by so many beautiful things, is also beautiful.

The Earth is amazing. There are so many things we don’t understand, but it’s amazing how beautiful it is.
